Kobe Bryant's final shot needs a deep rewind

10-Apr, 2021

On April 13, 2016, Kobe Bryant could have mailed in his last ever regular season game. Instead, it became one of the most prolific, exciting nights of his career. Before we watch Bryant's FIFTIETH SHOT -- his 26,200th as a Laker -- we should reflect on everything that made it so important.
It's worth taking a moment to reflect on the fact that Kobe made it through a record-setting 20 seasons in Los Angeles, somehow surpassing some of the greatest players in NBA history atop franchise leaderboards. Those twenty seasons included numerous championships, but also infighting, scandal, trade requests, and more losing than you might remember. Of course, by the time 2016 rolled around, those losing days had returned. To appreciate what Kobe gave us in his final game for a fallen team, it's worth remembering some of his most prolific scoring (and shooting) nights in prior down times.
Let's rewind.

  • Kobe’s last points that game were off of free throws, where Gordon Hayward performed one of the most respectful moves i’ve seen out of basketball; when the game was still that close he wanted Kobe and Laker fans to remember this night with a big 60 points, so just in case Kobe missed a free throw he would get another shot because Hayward stuck his foot into the paint before the shot.

  • You need to make a deep rewind of Bayern last minute goal against Hamburg to clinch the title in 2001. Here is why: 1. Bayern only needed a tie to win the championship but concedes a goal in the 90th minute (last minute of regular playing time). 2. Schalke, the direct rival in the championship race, needs Bayern to lose and a win to win it all. They are playing at the same time and Schalke wins 5:3. 3. The game ends at Schalke and the fans hear, that the Bayern - Hamburg game just surpassed the 90th minute mark and its 1-0 for Hamburg. Believing that Bayern lost hey storm the field and everyone, including players and coaches, start to celebrate. However, Bayern´s game is still on. 4 more minutes to play (stoppage time). 4. Hamburg´s defender passes the ball back to the goalie who picks it up. The ref has to blow the whistle. What happened: Until 1992 goalies were permitted to pick up passes with their hands by allied players. With the goalie picking up the ball, Bayern gains a free kick within the penalty box. An unusual position, because breach of rules usually leads to a penalty. 5. Bayern´s Patrik Andersson takes the kick, 8 meters away from the goal, with nearly all of Hamburg´s players standing inside the goal. Somehow the ball slips between a leg and the goal post into the goal. Bayern ties the game and wins the championship. 6. Meanwhile at Schalke, everyone is celebrating frantically. Slowly the news goes around that Hamburg conceded a last-minute goal and Schalke will not hoist the cup. Backstory and aftermath: - Schalke never won the Bundesliga championship in its history and still hasn´t. Bayern was and still is the record holder for most championships. Expect Bayern fans (and maybe Dortmund), the entirety of German football fans was against Bayern and for Schalke. With the dramatic ending Schalke was given the nickname “Champion of the hearts (Meister der Herzen). - The victory in Hamburg ultimately cemented Oliver Kahn´s legacy as the “TITAN”. While most Bayern players were completely devastated after conceding the 1-0 Kahn ferociously pushed his players to play out the last 4 minutes of the game. His screams “Weiter, immer weiter” (Keep going, always keep going.) showcased willpower and leadership that are respected until today and rightfully put him in the debate of greatest goalie in soccer. - Bayern would win the Champions League a few weeks later in a penalty shootout. Oliver Kahn would safe 3 of 5 kicks.
