Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl. Here's what left him empty-handed.

This might be the most requested video we've ever had, so thrilled to finally present Dan Marino's episode of "Untitled." Well, it's Ryan's episode of "Untitled" about Dan Marino, but you get it.
I don't think any of us fully understood how absurd Marino's career was - in a few different senses of the word "absurd." MVP in his first full season as starter, his name lining the league's record books, two of the most accomplished coaches the league has ever seen, and a level of disfunction that makes the shortcomings more frustrating and the success even more impressive. Achieving that at the same time is a very impressive feat - just probably not as sweet as a Super Bowl win would've been.
Check out this episode to fully understand what happened over 17 years in order for Dan Marino to finish his career untitled.

  • The biggest obstacle standing between Marino and the Lombard trophy stood on his own sidelines most of the time. Don Shula is among the most overrated coaches in history. Consider that before he got to the Dolphins, he sure made his mark in Miami. As the losing coach of the iconic Joe Namath Super Bowl with a Colts team that was an 18 point favorite. Yes, the undefeated season and repeat championship teams are stellar. But in the 20 years after that, there is a lot of schoolyard bully action. 10 wins a year in a weak division with no consistent contenders until the early 1990s Bills. Then follow up those seasons with postseason duds against teams that were legendary (Steel curtain Pittsburgh, the pillaging Raiders, the hogs of D.C., Montana's 49ers), or else flash in the pan teams like the 1981 Chargers. Look at the full AFC Championship game in 1993 where Miami is home and Jim Kelly is returning from injury. It should have been lopsided. It was, but for Buffalo. The Bills outcoached, out-hussled, and outclassed Miami. Sorry, but Marino was done no favors in a football sense by taking his talents to South Beach. I guess he can take solace with the weather and favorable income tax.

The only time you can say that is in one on one sports like tennis, boxing, MMA, etc. Dan Marino, Earl Campbell, a few of the best ever. In basketball, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone. • People use inconsistent reasoning for who the best ever QB is. Most will say Tom Brady and Joe Montana are better all-time QBs than Peyton Manning because they have more super bowl wins; yet also believe 0-time champion Dan Marino was better than 4-time champion Terry Bradshaw and 3-time champion Troy Aikmen. This means they are using different metrics to judge certain QBs, which really just means the "best" in their minds isn't even based off reality.

    • Marino, Moon, Kelly, Steve Young, John Elway, the start of Troy Aikman’s career, and the end of Joe Montana’s career all intersected. That’s seven Hall of Fame quarterbacks that were all active from 1989-1994. Also, the start of Brett Favre’s career was 1991 too. In 1993, all of those quarterbacks but Marino played in the postseason. Talk about a cutthroat period for the position.

  • In the 1984 SuperBowl, the first few Dolphin possessions they went on a no-huddle offense. Completely surprising the 49ers which ran maybe a 3-4 or 4-3 Defense and Miami got a TD from Marino to Johnson. The 49ers adjusted to a Nickle Defense and benched their slow linebackers and it was over after that. Don't forget in that year, all 4 DBs starters for the 49ers (CB Lott, CB Wright, SS Williamson, and FS Hicks) were all on the Pro-Bowl. They were really good! The Defensive line for the 49ers which included Fred Dean and Big Hands Johnson, Dwaine Board harrassed Marino all game long. Marino had 4 sacks in the Superbowl which equaled his total of sacks the whole 1984 season. There are no mulligans in the Superbowl. You bring what you have that day.

  • Marino, Jim Kelly, Dan Fouts and Fran Tarkenton were all chokers. Marino was a super choker. Marino's High School, Central Catholic went to the State Championships, where Marino lost. Pitt was one of the hottest Colleges in the country. Pitt was ranked in the top 5, but never won the National Championship. Of course, Marino was a choker in the NFL. Drug use might be the problem, but Fran Tarkenton never had a drug problem. I believe that all chokers are natural talents, who can't win the big game. Things come easy to natural talents, but Championship games are not easy. Although, Bradshaw was the 1st player picked in his draft, his first 4 years were bad. In Bradshaw's 4th year, he was benched in favor of Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam. Joe was benched after a few games. Bradshaw went on to win four Super Bowls. Brady was the last QB picked in the draft. Both Brady and Bradshaw had to fight to become QB.

  • I watched NFL Network's biography on Marino, and they ask him directly about never winning a Super Bowl. Marino, not wanting to lie because he's an awesome guy like that....gets rather emotional when reflecting. He was holding back tears. He admits that of course he wishes he had won a Super Bowl, and he's well aware of the blemish. Marino's mother was also interviewed and she was even more candid. She made it sound like it is something that weighs on him, constantly. I could not help but just feel absolutely horrible for Marino after watching that. Football is a team sport. I don't think Marino's career should be diminished because of no Super Bowl ring. The same as Jim Kelly with the Bills.

  • When you' re loosing AFC championship game against the poor 85 Patriots you can' t win a SB. The Dolphins were the only team who could beat the 85 Baers, Marino devastated Bears defense and he maybe could have do it in SB once again. In retrospect I believe it would have been easier as to beat the 49er.

  • Dan Marino didn't quite have the X Factor as did Brady and Montana. Like Elway, Dan Marino needed a Superior running back like Terrell Davis to take over big games.
